Givens Parr was born in Greenville, SC, in 1993. She grew up reading and making things. Early career aspirations included dentist, magician, herpetologist, and poet.
She attended high school at Phillip's Academy Andover in Andover, MA. As a junior at Phillips Academy she enrolled in her first painting class. For the following two years she focused on portrait painting.
Givens studied Mandarin as a teenager, and in 2011 she traveled to China to improve her language skills and explore traditional Chinese medicine.
In 2012 she matriculated to Brown University in Providence, RI. She continued her studies of Chinese language and civilization and earned a B.A. in East Asian Studies in 2016. In the months leading up to graduation she picked up her brushes again and enrolled in a painting course at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
In April of 2017 Givens joined Untitled Studio in downtown Greenville. Untitled is an experimental residency program for emerging artists.
Outside her studio time Givens works as an assistant to a professor of Asian Studies and Anthropology at Furman University. They are making a documentary film about a village school in the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, China.
Givens has received an enrichment grant from the Taiwanese Ministry of Education to study at National Taiwan University's language center this fall. She will continue to paint in Taipei where she hopes to learn more about traditional Chinese ink wash techniques.
